The George Mason University Debate Team has consistently earned rankings among the top debate schools in the nation.The program has been dominant in District VII, which encompasses Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia. Highlights of GMU successes illustrate both regional and national achievements:

-First place rankings in 1991 and 1994 

-Top Five rankings in seven of the twelve years that rankings have been kept 

-Repeat winners of the American Debate Association championship tournament 

-Repeat winners of the ADA annual sweepstakes competition 

-Qualification for the National Debate Tournament in 22 of 25 years 

-First round at-large bids to NDT on several occasions 

-Won or placed at almost every major tournament in the country over the years

The GMU Debate Team has excelled in both regional and national competition. Participating in tournaments from coast to coast, the team reflects a broad-based philosophy, maximizing student learning at the novice, junior varsity, and varsity levels of competition. Top rankings are difficult to achieve and Mason Debate is proud of this and its other achievements.
